What it does
Compare one Item section (e.g. '1A' Risk Factors, '7' MD&A) between two filings of the same company and return modified, added and removed sentences. Preferred: pass ticker + itemNumber (and optionally formType and accession numbers). The server then fetches both filings and diffs the FULL section text, covering every sentence; with no accession numbers it compares the latest two filings of that form. Only pass oldText/newText for text from elsewhere. Useful for catching newly disclosed risks or subtle changes in management language period over period.
Added, removed, and modified sentences with the selected filing context and comparison counts.
Who it helps
Analysts tracking disclosure changes in Risk Factors, MD&A, or another supported filing Item.
Inputs
Input names and constraints below come from the registered MCP tool schema.
| Input | What it controls |
|---|---|
| ticker required | Company ticker, e.g. TSLA. Use with itemNumber for a full server-side comparison. |
| itemNumber required | Item to compare, e.g. '1A' (Risk Factors) or '7' (MD&A) for a 10-K, '2' for 10-Q MD&A |
| formType required | ZodDefault Default: 10-K. |
| oldAccessionNumber required | Earlier filing (from list_recent_filings). Omit to use the second-latest. |
| newAccessionNumber required | Later filing. Omit to use the latest. |
| oldText required | Raw section text from the earlier filing (only if not using ticker + itemNumber) |
| newText required | Raw section text from the later filing (only if not using ticker + itemNumber) |
Example request
Compare the latest two Apple 10-K Risk Factors sections and list sentences added or reworded.
{
"ticker": "AAPL",
"itemNumber": "1A",
"formType": "10-K"
}What to expect
Added, removed, and modified sentences with the selected filing context and comparison counts.
Important limits
Automated sentence matching is lexical, not legal or semantic analysis. It can pair passages imperfectly; review both linked SEC filings before interpreting a change.
Data sources and verification
EdgarStack uses SEC EDGAR filings and, for applicable tools, SEC XBRL company-facts data. Coverage depends on the issuer, filing, taxonomy tags, and tool inputs. Follow the source filing references and verify material facts against the official filing.
