What it does
Fetch a 10-K or 10-Q and extract one Item section's text (e.g. itemNumber '1A' for Risk Factors, '7' for MD&A in a 10-K, '2' for MD&A in a 10-Q). Use list_recent_filings first to get the accessionNumber and primaryDocument. If what the user asked for doesn't map cleanly to one Item — e.g. "the financial section" could mean Item 7 (Management's Discussion and Analysis of Financial Condition and Results of Operations, i.e. MD&A — management's narrative) or Item 8 (Financial Statements and Supplementary Data, i.e. the actual audited statements) in a 10-K — ask which they mean, naming both Item numbers AND their official headings, instead of picking one silently; pulling the wrong section wastes the call and can read as if it answered the question when it didn't. The extractor anchors on line-level Item headings and returns a qualityWarning for unusually short sections; it is still heuristic, so check the linked SEC filing when the passage matters.
The requested section text with filing identifiers and a quality warning when extraction appears unusually short.
Who it helps
Researchers who need the source text for a particular filing section, such as Risk Factors or MD&A.
Inputs
Input names and constraints below come from the registered MCP tool schema.
| Input | What it controls |
|---|---|
| ticker required | ZodString |
| accessionNumber required | From list_recent_filings, e.g. 0000320193-24-000123 |
| primaryDocument required | From list_recent_filings, e.g. aapl-20240928.htm |
| formType required | ZodEnum Allowed: 10-K, 10-Q. |
| itemNumber required | e.g. '1A', '7', '2' |
Example request
First list Apple's latest 10-K, then extract Item 1A (Risk Factors) from the returned filing.
{
"ticker": "AAPL",
"accessionNumber": "<accessionNumber from list_recent_filings>",
"primaryDocument": "<primaryDocument from list_recent_filings>",
"formType": "10-K",
"itemNumber": "1A"
}What to expect
The requested section text with filing identifiers and a quality warning when extraction appears unusually short.
Important limits
Section extraction uses heading heuristics and can miss unusual filing layouts. For a 10-K, Item 7 is MD&A while Item 8 contains financial statements; select the intended Item explicitly and verify the source filing.
Data sources and verification
EdgarStack uses SEC EDGAR filings and, for applicable tools, SEC XBRL company-facts data. Coverage depends on the issuer, filing, taxonomy tags, and tool inputs. Follow the source filing references and verify material facts against the official filing.
