screen_by_ratio

Ranks SEC filers by a named ratio preset or a custom numerator and denominator from supported XBRL frame metrics. Inputs are joined only when their period ends match.

Analysts exploring market-wide ratio distributions before selecting peers for deeper review.

What it does

Rank SEC filers by a computed ratio. Pass a named preset (grossMargin, operatingMargin, netMargin, rdIntensity, capexIntensity, fcfMargin, currentRatio, debtToEquity, returnOnAssets, returnOnEquity, cashToAssets, assetTurnover) or use a custom numerator/denominator from: revenue, grossProfit, operatingIncome, netIncome, epsBasic, epsDiluted, totalAssets, currentAssets, totalLiabilities, currentLiabilities, longTermDebt, totalEquity, cashAndEquivalents, operatingCashFlow, capex, rdExpense. Values are joined only when all source metrics have the same periodEnd, and denominators must be positive. Revenue uses the preferred tag and two known US-GAAP synonyms; xbrlTagsQueried lists candidates and each result's sourceXbrlTags identifies the selected tags. Filers without aligned periods/tags are excluded; unusually large ratios are returned with a dataQualityFlags warning and should be checked against their source tags. SEC calendar-year frames can represent the issuer's closest fiscal period rather than a year ending December 31, so compare periodEnd and sourceAccessionNumbers.

Ranked ratio values with issuer identifiers, source XBRL tags, period ends, and data-quality flags where needed.

Inputs

Input names and constraints below come from the registered MCP tool schema.

InputWhat it controls
ratio requiredA named preset ratio
numerator requiredMetric name for the numerator, if not using a preset
denominator requiredMetric name for the denominator, if not using a preset
year requiredCalendar year for the frame period
quarter requiredOmit for full fiscal year (duration metrics) or a Q4 year-end snapshot (balance-sheet metrics)
min requiredMinimum ratio value filter
max requiredMaximum ratio value filter
sort requiredZodDefault Default: desc.
limit requiredZodDefault Default: 20.

Example request

Screen SEC filers for annual gross margins above 30% in the 2024 frame and sort highest first.

What to expect

Ranked ratio values with issuer identifiers, source XBRL tags, period ends, and data-quality flags where needed.

Important limits

Only exact period-end matches with complete source metrics are included, and the denominator must be positive. Review source tags and data-quality flags before drawing conclusions.

Data sources and verification

EdgarStack uses SEC EDGAR filings and, for applicable tools, SEC XBRL company-facts data. Coverage depends on the issuer, filing, taxonomy tags, and tool inputs. Follow the source filing references and verify material facts against the official filing.
